10/15/2023 Natural upholsteryCreating natural upholstery projects can be an incredibly fulfilling and eco-conscious endeavor. Many of my clients had already made the commendable choice of selecting chemical-free fabrics from Revolution. After a few back to back requests, I was ready to take it a step further by contemplating earth-friendly cushions - both inside and out.
For the cushioning, I opted for natural latex foam derived from rubber trees, which is renewable and biodegradable. I even wanted to keep glue out of these cushions, and so I hand-stitched organic wool batting into place. This extra effort ensured that my upholstery projects remained chemical-free and environmentally friendly. It was a labor of love, but at the end of the day I was immensely proud to deliver these cushions to my clients. These projects also made me especially appreciate the craft of making box cushions. As I was making them, I imagined that my process was similar to a time when people only had natural materials to work with. I felt lucky to at least have the electricity powered sewing machine at my behest ;D 7/1/2023 not enough hours in the day...Not enough indeed. A quick share of my absolute passion project that I'm squeezing in whenever I'm not working on cushions :). I've been sewing these stunning wallets and bags which have a clear opening in the face with pressed flowers. I'm thrilled to be creating something that is not only unique but also sustainable and earth friendly. Each bag is made from salvaged materials, scraps that would have otherwise been in the landfill. I'm using vinyl and marine canvas, which are fabrics specifically designed to not decompose in the sunlight or rain. It's the best feeling to take these pieces and make something both beautiful and functional. Nature and textile art brought together and made useful. I've mostly been selling these at craft fairs and to some local stores, but I'm hoping to get them onto a website soon. Stay tuned <3
4/20/2023 Healthy fabrics for a healthy homeI wanted to say hi and share a fun update! Cushions have been busy busy busy, and I've been loving all my clients. Each project is so unique to a person's style and life. It is such a great feeling for it all to come together in something both pretty and functional like a cushion. My most favorite thing right now is the fabric I've been asking clients to use, which is Revolution Fabric. The company is based in the United States and is one of the very few chemical free upholstery fabrics I have ever come across. Free of plastics and acrylics, yet so budget friendly! I've been absolutely loving it. It's almost impossible to feel like we can make a difference in our relationship to the environment in any big way, but lots of small ways can definitely add up. Being thoughtful and having conversations about what we value and how we want to stay healthy is always important. I never thought I'd have an opportunity to revolve those conversations around the fabrics in our home, but I'm happy to be doing just that!
1/10/2023 Demo dreams1/28/2022 sew tiny loveIt's been a wonderful and chaotic winter so far <3 I'm an official tiny home owner and got this beauty moved in just a week before record snowfall in Washington. It has been so cozy and delightful, with all my floor cushions and a fireplace going pretty much 24/7. sewing has been great lately! I've done a lot of van and RV cushions, and can't wait to get started on my own couch. I've got a bench to build and a huge roll of velvet waiting. So excited!

Hi! I'm NikaI first learned how to sew when I was 13. Once I figured out how to alter and make my own clothes, I was head over heels in love. My recent sewing obsession is box cushions and I'll be taking (what I call) big girl upholstery courses throughout 2022. More tools and skills, and opportunities for creativity. I'm excited to share my projects here with you! |
